The holidays have always been so magical to me. Starting with the fun of Halloween, going into stuffing my face with Thanksgiving and of course the magical romanticism of Christmas.
So here we are in the middle of December. Lights everywhere, the feeling of Christmas in the air along with the bitter chill that accompanies it, at least here in Utah.
I love it all. I joke about it being Halloween all year long, and for me it is true as it is now my business. The fun of Halloween never stops here at my home. I am the lover of Halloween and my wonderful wife is the lover of Christmas. We have a great understanding that she leaves me alone for decorating for Halloween and I leave her alone for Christmas decorating. Okay, let me clarify that. I leave her alone for Christmas decorating and she leaves me alone for Halloween as long as she agrees with what I’m doing. (Which isn’t all that often.)
My wife is very meticulous when it comes to Christmas decorating. Everything has to be just so, and the money spent to get it that way reflects her passion. So you can imagine her response the other day when she got home and noticed how I had improved on her decorating ideas. I must admit that it was beautiful. I almost had tears in my eyes when I stepped back to take in my handiwork.
I was a little surprised. It was the first time in a very long time that I heard expletives come out of her mouth and every one of them had my name connected to it.
I had a pretty good laugh, took some pictures and hurriedly attempted to return things to their more boring state before all my skulls ended up in the trash can.
Actually, she was a pretty good sport about it all. She acts tough but is a marshmallow inside. She tells everyone how much she hates Halloween and loves Christmas, but the truth be told, most of my best ideas and best sellers for Halloween have been her ideas. My best sellers, which are the Horror Dolls? Her idea! The Cauldron Soup bowls which I cannot keep in stock. Her idea! Spider Web Ornaments? Yup, her idea. Marrying me? Her idea! … She just saw that and said everyone is entitled to mistakes.
As we approach the new year, I am so totally excited about the future. We here at ElsBeth Lair are way ahead of projections. This past August, orders started flying in and have never slowed down. I thought for sure after Halloween things would calm down, but not so and I am very happy about that.
Halloween the holiday was a great experience for us. I didn’t think I would be able to pull it off because I found myself working 16 – 18 hour days and was exhausted, but our family party came together and went great and the trick or treaters were treated very well with gourmet popcorn with flavors of their choice and candy. The number of kids visiting our home keeps increasing every year as word gets out that we try and offer a little bit more of the Halloween spirit each year.
So now the new year is just around the corner. I have so many goals for 2017 along with so many new ideas to help ElsBeth Lair grow.
Thank you all for your support this year. It has been a great one.
As always, Happy Halloween! Talk to you soon
