It was a beautiful spring morning when I got a call from my dad. “Son, could you come up and help me out with mom’s doll cabinet? There was a strange accident last night I guess, and there is a bunch of broken glass.”
My mom was a big doll collector. This guest room that she thought was beautiful would scare the bravest of the brave when walking in. There was a high shelf going completely around the room stuffed with dolls. Every kind you could imagine from dolls from when she was a little girl to collector edition dolls that she collected when she worked for a toy warehouse. The bed had dolls all over it and then there was the doll cabinet which was about 6-1/2′ high and about 5′ wide. it had four glass doors on the sides and complete glass front beautifully displaying her special collection of creepy critters.
When I arrived it was just as described, very strange. All the glass in the cabinet had exploded. There wasn’t one bit of glass left in the frames and every bit of it was out in the room. So it wasn’t anything that hit it from the outside as all the glass was blown outward. I couldn’t find even a sliver of glass inside the doll cabinet and not one doll seemed disturbed. Each and every doll just stood there looking at me with sheepish grins on their faces.
As I was cleaning up the glass, I kept talking to the dolls as if I was expecting them to respond, blaming them for kicking out the glass. How else could it all be knocked out from the inside. It isn’t a sealed cabinet where heat or anything could build up causing it to be blown out, and I did catch myself shooting quick glances at them to see if I could catch any of them move.
So why do I share this little story with you? Well, because I am here to tell you that amongst all the creepy that is creepy, there really isn’t anything that beats out how disturbing the blank stare of a doll can be.
Even when my daughters were small and I would tuck them in at night. I would catch a glimpse of one of their dolls and get a slight chill before looking away.
So it goes without mention that when decorating for Halloween, if you are going for the creepy and scary then don’t overlook placing dolls into your decor.
Of course you will want to have a little fun messing them up before displaying them. I am hoping you are not crazy enough to touch any of your daughters or granddaughters dolls. You do want to survive Halloween after all. So what I do is go to the thrift stores. I usually can pick up fairly nice dolls for around .50 cents. When I say nice, I mean dolls that have already been through torturous years in the arms of a child. Sometimes missing limbs and most assuredly a bad hair cut or two. Yes, these are the dolls that will send chills through anyone that gazes upon them in your decor. I think it is a look on the dolls faces of wanting to get even somehow.
I usually like to make their skin very pale with some off white spray paint and then apply make up with acrylic paint. The best way to do this is to have a guy put on the makeup and ask him to do the very best job he can. By the time he is done it should be scary as hell.
