Wow! That is about all I have to say about the show we did this past weekend. We did far beyond our expectations in sales and it made me just that much more excited about the upcoming Halloween Season.
Not only was it a great show success wise, but the contacts I made were priceless. I am now positioned to take the business to the next level.
Let me tell you a little about the show itself. It was a beautiful morning. Getting set up we had my son come out and help us two old folks getting everything ready. The booth worked great and we were able to get everything to show nicely.
It was a cloudy morning, making everything a little bit cool during set up, but things changed as soon as the sun started burning the cloud cover off. Quickly the temperature soared to over 100 degrees and it didn’t take long for the asphalt to heat up making it very hot on our feet. Our booth was set up to invite people into it which left my wife and I on the outside. And so for 12 hours, from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm we were out in the sun with no shade to speak of.
I really thought I had brought enough water, but we were out by 2:00 in the afternoon, and by about 6:00 my wife was suffering from the heat and we had to find shade for her to rest for the remainder of the time.
That makes it sound like a horrible ordeal, but quite the contrary. Despite the heat, people came out in droves. We had over 20,000 people show up and it was a great time to be had by all. Lots of costumes and music filled the streets and the people who visited were the friendliest people to talk to.
From 5:00 – 7:00 it opened up for the kids to go Trick or Treating to all the booths. I estimated we gave out about 1200 pieces of candy in those two hours. It was very refreshing to have pretty much all of the kids say “Thank You” when they got their candy. I don’t think I’ve said “You are very welcome” so many times in all my life.
I wished them all a Happy Halloween as they left. One little boy looked up at his mom and said, “But it isn’t Halloween!” Before I could even say anything, his mom said, “That’s okay, to some people it is Halloween all year long.” She looked up at me and smiled and said, “Happy Halloween to you too!”
The sales continued even after the show. We had just got everything boxed up and I was loading the canopy into the van when a lady ran up and started looking at my boxes. She spotted a Witch’s Broom and said, “Oh good, you still have one. Can I still buy it?” I started laughing, like “no ma’am, it is after 8:00. I don’t want to make any more money tonight.”
She bought the broom and even helped us load some of our stuff into the van. What a bunch of wonderful people.
On the drive back home we realized that not only were we dying of thirst, but we hadn’t eaten at all throughout the day. We stopped at a little Chinese place and went through 2 liters of water before our meal was brought out, and then went through about the same amount of Diet Coke before we were done.
All in all it was a great success and a day for the books.
Now, since the show, I have had time to reflect and do some serious thinking about the direction of the business. I still have 3 more shows scheduled, but at this point I’m not sure how many I will do if any. The shows are fun, I make some actual money for a change, but when you think about the hours and expense spent on getting ready for a show and building up inventory etc. In order to keep up with it all just might put me in an early grave.
I’ve noticed how much time it has taken me away from the website and building the business according to the business plan, and I’m afraid that the shows might not be helping the business grow as much as I need them too.
I am going to try and get back to the original business plan of building the site, doing tutorials and reaching out to teach others about creating Halloween Decor. If I can get the visitors to the page, then I can sell advertising and start getting a more substantial income.
So, I’m not giving up on the shows, but I just can’t spend all my time preparing for them.
Here are a few pics of my booth. I hope you visit the webpage more often. I promise to have new things on a constant and continual basis.
Happy Halloween Everyone!
